At the start

The Yates brothers, and Jaizkibel

Adam Yates won in Bilbao from his twin brother and wears the first yellow jersey, eight seconds up on Simon and eighteen on his own leader Tadej Pogačar, with Jonas Vingegaard at 22. Enric Mas abandoned yesterday; Richard Carapaz, who crashed on the same descent, does not start. Today is 209 kilometres to San Sebastián over four modest climbs and then the Jaizkibel, seventeen kilometres out.

1. 180 km to go

   Powless defends the polka dots

   Neilson Powless leads the break over every classified climb, defending his mountains jersey, the last man standing out front as the mighty Jaizkibel approaches.

2. 216 km to go

   Jaizkibel

   On the climb that defines the Clásica San Sebastián, Pogačar accelerates near the summit with 16km to go and only Vingegaard can follow. The Slovenian takes the bonus sprint at the top and the pair crest fifteen seconds clear.

3. 31 km to go

   Lafay's coup du kilomètre

   The chasers regroup for the finale, but Victor Lafay times a perfect flyer beneath the flamme rouge. Van Aert holds fire a fraction too long and the Frenchman is gone.

4. 4At the line

   San Sebastián

   Lafay ends a fifteen-year drought for Cofidis; a frustrated Van Aert bangs his bars winning the sprint for second, while Pogačar's bonus seconds lift him to within six of yellow.
