The road

At the start

Over the Cime de la Bonette

Three days left, and Jonas Vingegaard is 3:11 behind. In each of the last two Julys he broke Pogačar on the highest mountain of the Tour; today that mountain is the Cime de la Bonette, reached over the Col de Vars, with the climb to Isola 2000 still waiting beyond it. But Visma are a thinner team this year — no Roglič, no Kuss, a Van Aert far from his best — and it comes down to the Dane himself.

1. 1112 km to go

   A break with three Visma men

   Visma load the 21-rider move with Jorgenson, Laporte and Kelderman — the first chess move of the day's GC battle over the giant Cime de la Bonette.

2. 280 km to go

   UAE control the Bonette

   Politt sets a brutal, grinding tempo up the highest road of the Tour, isolating Vingegaard from his helpers and putting the fear into the Dane on the lunar upper slopes.

3. 313 km to go

   Jorgenson attacks for the stage

   On the climb to Isola 2000 Matteo Jorgenson jumps clear of the break with 13km to go, time-trialling for the biggest win of his life with nearly three minutes on the yellow jersey.

4. 49 km to go

   Pogačar launches

   Pogačar attacks 8.7km from the line; Vingegaard and Evenepoel briefly try to follow, then abandon the chase — a final acceptance of his dominance.

5. 5At the line

   Caught and beaten, Pogačar wins

   The Slovenian devours a three-minute gap, catches Jorgenson 2km out, drops him and takes a bow — unstoppable in yellow.
