The road

At the start

Bastille Day, eight climbs, no Almeida

João Almeida abandoned yesterday, and Tadej Pogačar goes into the Massif Central without the mountain domestique who was meant to be his shield. He still leads Remco Evenepoel by 54 seconds and Jonas Vingegaard by 1:17. Bastille Day gives them eight climbs and 4,300 metres of climbing in 165 kilometres, almost no flat road anywhere, and a breakaway every rider in the race has circled.

   Bastille Day break

   On Bastille Day a colossal break of the strongest escapees goes clear over the eight climbs of the Massif Central.

2. 288 km to go

   Attrition bites

   With 88km to go the relentless up-and-down shreds the breakaway as Simon Yates marks the dangerous moves.

3. 326 km to go

   Yates attacks

   Inside the final climbs Yates attacks and goes solo, timing his move to perfection on the punishing roads beneath the Puy de Sancy.

4. 415 km to go

   Yellow changes hands

   Behind, the race lead changes again as Ben Healy distances Pogačar's group to move into yellow.
