The road
Before the race
Out of Edinburgh, over the Border
The first Tour stage ever raced in Scotland leaves Edinburgh for the hills of the Scottish Borders, where the Côte de Melrose, 2.2 kilometres at 6.7%, carries the race's first mountain points. Inside the last forty kilometres the road crosses into England by Longtown and Brampton and runs fast into Carlisle. Flat on paper, rarely flat for long, and open to the wind.
