The road
How it was won
- 46 km to go
Terpstra jumps on the Koppenberg
Halfway up the brutal cobbled wall Niki Terpstra attacks. Benoot reacts, Gilbert, Van Avermaet, Sagan and an impressive Nibali all scramble across, and the front group is filleted to thirty.
- 38 km to go
Van Avermaet lights the Taaienberg
On the Taaienberg, 38km out, Greg Van Avermaet unleashes a savage acceleration. Vanmarcke, Štybar, Van Aert, Sagan and Kristoff cling to his wheel, but nothing sticks and the elite group edges back together.
- 27 km to go
The winning move on the Kruisberg
Nibali counters on the Kruisberg's asphalt and only Terpstra follows. On the short, savage Hotond ramp the Dutchman simply rides away from the Milan-San Remo winner, and the Ronde is suddenly his to lose.
- 17 km to go
Solo over the Oude Kwaremont
Terpstra times his catch of the leaders to perfection and powers past them before the Kwaremont village. Mads Pedersen is the last man distanced; Quick-Step's cobbled machine has struck again.
- 14 km to go
Sagan's futile Paterberg dig
Sagan attacks on the main road and pushes on over the Paterberg, trying to bridge alone, but it is desperate and hopeless. Up the road Terpstra is riding away to a Monument.
- At the line
Terpstra wins in Oudenaarde
Terpstra soloes into Oudenaarde for the biggest win of his career. Behind, Pedersen digs in to hold second ahead of a fast-finishing Philippe Gilbert.
