The road
At the start
Pogačar and Van der Poel, again
Bruges, 269 kilometres and seventeen bergs to Oudenaarde. Mathieu van der Poel already has three Rondes and a spring of Milan-San Remo and E3 behind him; Tadej Pogačar, beaten on the Via Roma a fortnight ago, has one, and starts as the man everyone else is riding against. Mads Pedersen, second at E3, is the third name on every list. The Kwaremont comes three times.
How it was won
- 45 km to go
The Koppenberg
On the brutal cobbled wall the front group is filleted. Riders are walking on the gutters behind as the elastic finally snaps between the favourites and everyone else.
- 17 km to go
Oude Kwaremont, last time
Pogačar hits the Kwaremont a final time and lifts the pace until only Van der Poel and Pedersen are clinging on. The winning move is being loaded.
- 13 km to go
The Paterberg blow
On the steepest ramp of the day Pogačar accelerates once more — and this time nobody answers. He crests alone with thirteen kilometres to ride.
- At the line
Solo into Oudenaarde
Pogačar time-trials to the line for his second Tour of Flanders. A minute back, Mads Pedersen edges Van der Poel for second, the pair already racing for the scraps.
