The road
At the start
Nibali back in red, a day for sprinters
The time trial cost Chris Horner 1:29 and the jersey. Nibali leads Roche by thirty-three seconds, Valverde and Horner by forty-six. Today is a hundred and sixty-three kilometres from Maella to Tarragona, ending in a finale so full of roundabouts that the officials have pushed the safety zone out to five kilometres — the fast men's last chance before Madrid.
How it was won
- 10 km to go
Tony Martin tries the other way
He spent stage six alone for a hundred and seventy-five kilometres and lost it at a hundred metres. Today he waits until just after the last intermediate sprint, jumps, and has twelve seconds — and the sprinters' teams bring him back before the ten-kilometre banner.
- At the line
Gilbert, finally, in rainbow
Edvald Boasson Hagen goes early on the technical run into Tarragona and looks to have it. Then Philippe Gilbert catches him and passes him in the closing metres — the world champion's first victory of the season, eleven months into wearing the jersey.
