At the start

Nibali thrown out, Chaves in red

Vincenzo Nibali is out of the race, disqualified by the jury after the crash at Ardales — a favourite gone before the Vuelta is three days old. Esteban Chaves has red, five seconds up on Tom Dumoulin, with Chris Froome already forty back. Today runs the coast to Málaga, 161 kilometres with the climbing done early and a rise into the old city six from the line.

How it was won

  1. 37 km to go

    Three seconds for Chavanel

The Frenchman takes the intermediate sprint and the bonus seconds with it, and the sprint promptly detonates the break: Tjallingii and Gougeard jump away, the rest drift back to a peloton warming up along the Mediterranean.

  2. At the line

    Sagan finally wins one

Sky lead down the highway descent into Málaga, Giant put three men in front of Degenkolb, and the German opens with his shoulders rolling. It is not enough: Peter Sagan comes past and ends a very long run of second places.
