How it was won

  1. 47 km to go

    Ardales ends the break's day

Pedraza jumps near the summit for the mountains points, but Movistar and Katusha have already cut six riders' three minutes down to one. It looks like a routine catch and a duel up the Caminito del Rey.

  2. 30 km to go

A huge crash with thirty to go

Most of the peloton is caught out. Vincenzo Nibali is down; so is Paolo Tiralongo, bleeding heavily from the top of his head. After a long wait for bikes they set off again, and Nibali's chase back is a stage in itself.

  3. 4 km to go

    Quintana lights it up

Gautier's dig is shut down and Nairo Quintana goes with three kilometres left, dragging Nicolas Roche and Tom Dumoulin clear of the group.

  4. 1 km to go

    Chaves comes across

Set up perfectly by Orica, Esteban Chaves launches himself across the gap and nearly sails straight past all three. On the steepest ramps of the Caminito del Rey it is his fellow Colombian who cracks first.

  5. At the line

Two years, and a red jersey

Roche's last-ditch attack goes backwards and Dumoulin opens first, but Chaves has the legs. Two years after a crash that nearly ended his career, he wins in Spain and takes the leader's jersey.
