How it was won

1. 150 km to go

   Tinkoff take it up

   Twenty-three riders have five minutes and the race is at a tipping point with 80km to go — and then, surprisingly, it is Tinkoff rather than Movistar who move to the front, Contador's men choosing to close the race down themselves.

2. 26 km to go

   Hermans caught on Peña Cabarga

   Ben Hermans digs for lone glory on the 5.6km wall but Movistar's pace, driven by Rubén Fernández, is incessant and he is swept up with three kilometres to go.

3. 32 km to go

   Chaves' throw of the dice

   Inside the final two kilometres Esteban Chaves attacks alone to try to revive his overall hopes, and takes nineteen seconds out of nobody who matters.

4. 4At the line

   Froome and Quintana, eyeball to eyeball

   The two of them attack each other, look at each other, and neither can land the blow — until Froome finds a little extra in the last hundred metres and wins the sprint on the climb that made his name in 2011. Quintana keeps red; the gap is 54 seconds and the Vuelta has its story.
