Stage 2

The road

At the start

Sky hold the first five places

Team Sky beat Movistar by less than half a second yesterday, and Peter Kennaugh, first of them over the line, has the red jersey with four teammates on identical time behind him — Chris Froome fifth, Alejandro Valverde sixth, the whole race separated by nothing at all. Today is 161 kilometres to Baiona for the sprinters, over a second-category climb at halfway and one more lump ten kilometres out.

How it was won

1. 16 km to go

   Chaos in the run-in

A sleepy first road stage wakes up violently in the closing kilometres, with a couple of crashes scattering the bunch on the approach to Baiona.

2. 2At the line

   Meersman times it perfectly

Lampaert and Štybar hit the front with 500 metres left, perfectly placed on the left through the sweeping final left-hander, and Gianni Meersman jumps out of their slipstream and is never troubled.
