How it was won

1. 159 km to go

   The break splinters on the Lestaio

   The steep, narrow third-category climb kicks off the hard part of the day. Cousin strikes out with Pellaud on his wheel, dropping the flagging escapees, and the young Swiss takes the full complement of points at the summit.

2. 222 km to go

   Pellaud caught on the Paxareiras

   Rather than wait for help, Pellaud presses on alone — and is agonisingly caught by Serry and Geniez just before the summit, with 22km to go.

3. 317 km to go

   López hits the deck

   On a straight stretch of road Astana's Miguel Ángel López crashes heavily onto his front and takes a long time to get going, losing precious minutes.

4. 43 km to go

   Thirty per cent at the Mirador de Ézaro

   Kwiatkowski himself leads the bunch onto the wall in a sign of panic, but when the gradient reaches thirty per cent Sky are nowhere. Movistar take over and split the group to pieces — Contador and Kruijswijk among the big losers.

5. 5At the line

   Geniez survives, Fernández takes red

   The last man standing of the day's break, Alexandre Geniez holds on at the top of the Ézaro. Below him Rubén Fernández converts Movistar's forcing into the red jersey.
