How it was won

1. 1110 km to go

   Twenty-one get away at last

   It takes the bones of two hours on Galicia's rugged roads before a huge move sticks. Darwin Atapuma is in it, only 1:35 off the red jersey, and Movistar are content to let it ride.

2. 220 km to go

   Domont's move

   De Gendt stretches the group on a long false flat, then Axel Domont zips clear with 20km remaining and hits the foot of the Mirador de Veixía half a minute up.

3. 39 km to go

   Calmejane senses the lull

   Domont is reeled in after two kilometres of climbing, and the 23-year-old Lilian Calmejane, in his first Grand Tour, belies his inexperience by attacking straight into the gap with nine kilometres to go.

4. 4At the line

   Never out of sight, never caught

   The climb's long straights leave Calmejane visible to his pursuers the whole way, and still nobody gets near. Atapuma out-sprints King and Zeits for second, fifteen seconds down, and waits nervously for the favourites before pulling on red.
