The road
At the start
Atapuma in red, out of the break
Darwin Atapuma rode into the red jersey from a twenty-one-man breakaway and leads Valverde by twenty-nine seconds, Froome by thirty-three, Chaves and Quintana by thirty-nine. Today starts on the coast at Viveiro, where the wind can turn sixty flat kilometres into something quite different, then climbs a thousand metres in forty and runs sixty more to an uphill finish in Lugo.
How it was won
- 14 km to go
Machado's long day ends
Tiago Machado has ridden away from his only companion and held five minutes for most of the afternoon, but the peloton takes him with just over 14km left.
- 2 km to go
Kruijswijk's Vuelta ends against a pole
Simon Clarke jumps with just over two kilometres left and Gilbert goes with him. In the chaos behind, Steven Kruijswijk goes down hard at the roadside — a pole the cause — and his race is over on the tarmac. A second crash moments later blocks most of the peloton and very nearly takes Froome with it.
- At the line
Meersman's second in Lugo
Fewer than twenty riders contest the tricky uphill finish and Gianni Meersman finishes it off again ahead of Felline and Reza. Atapuma loses over a minute but the three-kilometre rule keeps him in red.
