How it was won

  1. 43 km to go

    Fraile hunts the mountains points

Omar Fraile attacks the climb with verve and pushes his lead past three minutes, chasing both the polka dots and a stage — with Zeits, Bakelants, Didier, Losada and Frank lying in wait behind him.

  2. 30 km to go

    Movistar take responsibility

With 30km to go and Mathias Frank clear of the field, Movistar and José Joaquín Rojas set a furious pace off the narrow descent and the day starts to close in on the escapees.

  3. 10 km to go

    Yates goes with Moreno

Frank's gap is down to seconds when Dani Moreno attacks — and brings Simon Yates with him. The Briton catches and drops Moreno, then Frank, and simply keeps going.

  4. At the line

    Yates' first Grand Tour stage

Simon Yates solos into Luintra 22 seconds clear of Luis León Sánchez, a first Grand Tour win for the 24-year-old months after a terbutaline ban his team's paperwork caused.
