At the start

La Pandera, the first HC of the race

Matteo Trentin won again in Tomares, his third stage of this Vuelta; Froome leads Nibali by 59 seconds, Chaves by 2:13 and Kelderman by 2:17. Today brings the first hors catégorie climb of the race: the Sierra de la Pandera, a narrow, broken, wind-blasted road up to an abandoned military post at 1,830 metres. The Vuelta has been there four times, and not since 2009.

How it was won

  1. 20 km to go

    Majka hits La Pandera

The break reaches the foot of the brutal Sierra de la Pandera nearly two minutes clear.

  2. 9 km to go

    Majka rides clear

On the narrow, savagely steep La Pandera, Rafał Majka drops his companions and rides alone, the field 1:20 behind.

  3. 4 km to go

    Contador and Nibali give chase

Contador and Nibali spring away from the red-jersey group in pursuit of the stage.

  4. 2 km to go

    Froome hauls it back

His helpers gone, Froome chases down the attackers himself, only for López to accelerate away again.

  5. At the line

    Majka wins on La Pandera

Rafał Majka holds on from the break to win atop La Pandera; López leads the favourites across 27 seconds down.
