   The Alto de la Cobertoria starts the day’s serious climbing under rain and low cloud.

2. 223 km to go

   Carnage on the wet Cordal

   On the treacherous, rain-slicked descent of the Cordal, Soler, Nibali and De la Cruz all crash; De la Cruz is forced to abandon.

3. 317 km to go

   Contador attacks the Angliru

   At the foot of the fearsome Angliru, Contador launches, catching and passing the last escapees.

4. 47 km to go

   Contador flies

   Alberto Contador soars up the double-digit ramps, building more than a minute on the Froome group.

5. 52 km to go

   Kruijswijk springs

   Steven Kruijswijk jumps from the favourites as Froome, marked by Nibali, calmly shepherds his red jersey home.

6. 6At the line

   Contador’s Angliru fairytale

   Alberto Contador wins atop the Angliru in the final mountain stage of his career, an emotional farewell as Froome all but seals the Vuelta.
