Stage 5
Froome gains a few seconds
- Wednesday 23 August 2017
- 175 km
- 2,907 m climbed
- Won by Alexey Lutsenko
The road
At the start
Four climbs and a wall at the end
Matteo Trentin took the sprint in Tarragona and nothing moved above him: Froome by two seconds from De la Cruz, Roche and Van Garderen, Nibali at ten, Chaves at eleven. John Degenkolb did not start. Today is the archetypal modern Vuelta stage — undulating all day over four categorised climbs, then a short wall to the hermitage above Alcossebre where a handful of seconds is all anyone can take.
