Yates in red by one second
La Covatilla finally gave this Vuelta a shape: Simon Yates is in red by a single second from Alejandro Valverde, with Nairo Quintana at fourteen and Emanuel Buchmann at sixteen — the whole top eight inside 32 seconds. Off the rest day, today is 177 quiet kilometres from Salamanca to Bermillo de Sayago over one small climb at Fermoselle. Dan Martin does not start.
How it was won

Punctures scare the leaders
The break is caught on the Alto de Fermoselle with 30km to go, and moments later a spate of punctures rattles Yates, Pinot, Kelderman and Quintana, though all latch back on.
