The road
At the start
Into Galicia, up and down all day
Nothing moved on the road to Bermillo: Simon Yates still leads Alejandro Valverde by one second and Nairo Quintana by fourteen. Today the race crosses into Galicia — 208 kilometres, 3,800 metres of climbing and five categorised ascents on roads that never sit still, with the Mirador de Cabezoas eighteen kilometres from the line at Luintra. It rarely stays dry up here.
How it was won
- 100 km to go
A hard-won break
The rolling Galician roads spark 100km of attacks before a 19-man move sticks — Pinot burning matches in it, chasing the red jersey.
- 18 km to go
De Marchi powers clear
On the final climb De Marchi powers away with Jhonatan Restrepo as BMC take control, distancing an over-generous Pinot.
- At the line
De Marchi soloes in the rain
De Marchi drops Restrepo in the final kilometres and pouring rain to win alone; Pinot, having raced too generously, misses even the stage.
