Stage 16

The road

At the start

32km against the clock at Torrelavega

Thibaut Pinot won at Covadonga through the fog while the favourites marked one another, and Simon Yates keeps red — 26 seconds on Alejandro Valverde, 33 on Nairo Quintana, 43 on Miguel Ángel López. Off the rest day comes the only long time trial of this Vuelta: 32 rolling kilometres from Santillana del Mar to Torrelavega, and the first day since Málaga that is not about climbing.

How it was won

   Dennis dominates the Torrelavega TT

Rohan Dennis crushes the rolling time trial, but the GC stays finely poised — Yates limits his loss to 1:28 and Valverde, Quintana, López and Pinot all finish within a minute of each other.
