At the start

97km, six passes, and the Gallina

The Rabassa was the day: Simon Yates attacked alone in the big ring and Valverde had no answer, so the red jersey now has 1:38 on him, 1:58 on Steven Kruijswijk and 2:15 on Enric Mas. Today is the last mountain stage and the shortest — 97 kilometres inside Andorra with six categorised climbs crammed into them, finishing on the Coll de la Gallina.

How it was won

  1. 33 km to go

    The race shatters on Beixalis

On the second time up the Coll de Beixalis the lead group splinters and the red jersey group begins to fracture, Astana driving relentlessly for López.

  2. 17 km to go

    Yates stamps his authority

Seventeen kilometres out, on the second ascent of the Coll de la Comella, Yates attacks and only Enric Mas can hold his wheel; the pair set off after the leaders up the road.

  3. 17 km to go

    Neutralised over the top

By the summit of the Comella the move has been brought back and the front of the race is together again. Everything now rests on the Coll de la Gallina.

  4. At the line

    Kruijswijk fights for the podium

On the hors-catégorie Coll de la Gallina, Steven Kruijswijk attacks in a desperate bid to save his slipping podium place.

  5. At the line

Mas wins, Yates seals the Vuelta

Enric Mas outsprints López to the summit for the win; Yates rolls in third to seal his first Grand Tour and complete a remarkable redemption after his Giro heartbreak.
