The road

At the start

The last mountains, in the Gredos

Rémi Cavagna, who has spent three weeks in echelons and breaks and lead-outs, finally took a day of his own into Toledo; Roglič went down on a wet descent and was caught in the crosswinds but ends it where he began, 2:50 up on Valverde. Tony Martin has gone home. Today is the last battleground — six climbs across the Sierra de Gredos where Hinault broke Gorospe in 1983, the Peña Negra chief among them.

How it was won

1. 140 km to go

   Astana attack the Peña Negra

   On the day's decisive climb Fuglsang shreds the bunch with a huge turn and López attacks; the strongest five clear twice but keep coming back together.

2. 239 km to go

   Pogačar launches from range

   Around 5km from the summit Pogačar jumps — cleanly, instantly clear — catching and passing the last breakaway men Geoghegan Hart and Guerreiro in the blink of an eye.

3. 334 km to go

   Alone over the top

   Pogačar crests the Peña Negra 1:40 clear and pedals almost the entire 20km descent in an aero tuck, a remarkable solo effort that leaves Movistar chasing rather than attacking Roglič.

4. 412 km to go

   The podium battle rages

   On the final climb to Plataforma de Gredos the favourites trade blows for the last podium step — Valverde, Roglič and Majka clear of a fading López — but Pogačar's lead never falls.

5. 5At the line

   Pogačar solos to third overall

   Pogačar takes a spectacular third stage win and leapfrogs to third on GC, while Roglič safely wraps up the overall title with one day to go.
