At the start

The Angliru, back after three years

Still nothing between them: Roglič in red, Carapaz level on time, Dan Martin at 25 seconds, Hugh Carthy at 58. Six riders left the race yesterday. Today is 109 kilometres long and has 3,100 metres of climbing in it — the Mozqueta, the Cordal, and then the Angliru, on the route for the first time since Contador's farewell in 2017. Its first kilometre touches 22%.

How it was won

1. 149 km to go

   A short, savage stage

   The break tackles the early climbs over the Alto de la Mozqueta on a brutally compact Angliru stage, everything geared toward the final wall.

2. 221 km to go

   Soler cracks on the Cordal

   On the vicious Alto del Cordal Marc Soler bleeds twenty seconds as Jumbo drive the pace, the GC group whittling down before the Angliru even begins.

3. 320 km to go

   Onto the Angliru

   The road rears to over 22 per cent in the first kilometre of the Angliru. Jumbo mass five riders around Roglič; Carapaz has only Froome for company.

4. 410 km to go

   Carapaz left to fend alone

   Froome drifts back to the cars and Carapaz is isolated for the final ten kilometres, grinding up the fearsome slopes with Roglič marking his every move.

5. 51 km to go

   Carthy charges

   Inside the final 1,200 metres Hugh Carthy explodes clear on the steepest pitch of all, and neither the red jersey nor the man level with him on time can go after him.

6. 6At the line

   Carthy conquers the Angliru

   Carthy wins alone atop the Angliru while Carapaz outkicks Roglič for fourth to reclaim red by ten seconds - three riders now inseparable at the top of the Vuelta.
