At the start

Roglič back in red, by 39 seconds

Roglič went up the Ézaro wall faster than anyone, won the time trial and took the jersey back: he leads Carapaz by 39 seconds and Carthy by 47, and the race suddenly has a shape. Today is 205 kilometres across the rugged interior of Galicia from Lugo to Ourense, three third-category climbs stacked into the second half and the last of them twenty kilometres out. A day for the break.

How it was won

  1. 23 km to go

    Break over the Abelaira

On the hilly run to Ourense the break crests the Alto de Abelaira, a strong group of attackers fighting for the day as the GC men rest.

  2. 10 km to go

    A small group survives

A handful of riders emerge from the break on the descent, Tim Wellens among them, setting up a sprint for the stage in Ourense.

  3. At the line

    Wellens doubles up

Wellens wins the reduced sprint and holds off a late charge from Michael Woods for his second stage of this Vuelta.
