Burgos, and Roglič after a third

Seven kilometres around the cathedral to open a Vuelta with nine summit finishes in it and, for the first time since 2002, a time trial at the end instead of a parade into Madrid. Primož Roglič, hurt out of the Tour in July, is chasing a third Vuelta in a row — only three riders have ever done it. Egan Bernal comes off the Giro chasing all three Grand Tours.

   The kick above Burgos

   The short climb away from the cathedral is the only real difficulty of the opening test, and it is where the seconds that matter are found.

2. 2At the line

   Roglič, last man out

   The defending champion starts last and finishes fastest, six seconds up on Aranburu. Behind him Mas, Yates, Carapaz, López and Bernal are separated by less than ten seconds — the Vuelta has its favourite before it has properly begun.
