The one flat day in Castile

Roglič holds red after the opening evening, six seconds up on Alex Aranburu, and every favourite is bunched within a handful of seconds. Today offers something the Vuelta almost never does: 167 kilometres across the Castilian plateau without a single categorised climb, finishing on a long straight in the Burgos suburbs. The sprinters get one clean chance.

   A crash outside the three-kilometre mark

   With 4.3km to go riders go down and plenty more are held up — and because it falls outside the neutralisation zone, everyone caught behind loses real time.

2. 2At the line

   Philipsen in Burgos

   Molano opens it up and Philipsen finds a gap to his left, edging out Jakobsen and Matthews on the long finishing straight.
