At the start

The Tourmalet, for the first time

The Vuelta has crossed the Col du Tourmalet before, in 1995, but it has never finished on it. Eleven riders sit inside three minutes of Sepp Kuss's red jersey and three of them are his own teammates. Today is only 136 kilometres with barely a flat metre in it: over the Portalet into France, then the Col d'Aubisque, the Col de Spandelles, and the Tourmalet all the way to the line.

1. 187 km to go

   Evenepoel cracks on the Aubisque

   The plot twist of the Vuelta: on the Col d'Aubisque, with 87km still to race, defending champion Evenepoel loses touch with the favourites and his title defence implodes — he will eventually cede over 27 minutes.

2. 28 km to go

   Vingegaard attacks the Tourmalet

   On the mighty Tourmalet Vingegaard unleashes a series of attacks 7.6km from the top; a second dig breaks the elastic and leaves only five behind him.

3. 36 km to go

   Mas counters

   Enric Mas launches from 40 seconds down, but the Jumbo train is imperious and the gap only grows.

4. 4At the line

   Col du Tourmalet

   Vingegaard soloes to the summit for a Jumbo-Visma 1-2-3, the team stamping total authority on the race.
