Ancares, the first day O'Connor marked

Pablo Castrillo took Manzaneda for Kern Pharma and the favourites finished together, so nothing has changed: Ben O'Connor leads Primož Roglič by 3:16, Enric Mas by 3:58, Richard Carapaz by 4:10. Lennert Van Eetvelt, fifth a week ago, has gone home. Today is one of the two days the red jersey marked as decisive — 171 kilometres to the Puerto de Ancares, whose slopes touch fifteen per cent, in the rain.

How it was won

1. 1111 km to go

   A 24-man break builds 15 minutes

   A formidable 24-rider move goes clear and, with Decathlon unable to stem it, opens a lead beyond fifteen minutes on the road to the Ancares.

2. 226 km to go

   McNulty and Vine crash

   On a fast descent before the final climb, UAE's McNulty and Vine slide off at speed, McNulty escaping the barrier by inches — a scare that reshapes the fight for the win.

3. 35 km to go

   Woods conquers the Ancares wall

   On the savage 15% slopes of the Puerto de Ancares, Michael Woods drops Schmid and rides solo 4.8km from the line for a big win in the Canadian champion's jersey.

4. 43 km to go

   Roglič drops O'Connor

   A Red Bull lead-out fires Roglič clear of the red jersey; relishing the brutal gradients, he drops Mas and Kuss and rides away, gaining 1:55 on O'Connor.

5. 5At the line

   Woods solos, Roglič closes on red

   Woods takes a famous solo win while Roglič's raid slashes O'Connor's lead to just 1:21 with the race blown wide open.
