The road
At the start
Cascais to Ourém, and a late hill
Brandon McNulty holds the first maillot rojo, two seconds up on Mathias Vacek and three on Wout van Aert, with Primož Roglič already seventeen back. The first road stage runs 191 kilometres from the surf at Cascais, past Sintra and inland, and it looks like a sprint — except for the Alto da Batalha, a small climb topping out just under twenty kilometres from Ourém, and exactly the springboard a late attacker wants.
How it was won
- 2 km to go
A crash inside the last 2km
The tense run to Ourém is marred by a fall that brings down Tarling and Narváez, a reminder of the razor edge of a Grand Tour's opening days.
- At the line
Groves takes the sprint
Kaden Groves parks on Van Aert's wheel and sweeps past in sight of the line for his first win of the year, while Van Aert's second place is enough to seize the red jersey.
