The road

At the start

The first summit finish, on day two

Jasper Philipsen wears the first red jersey, four seconds up on Ethan Vernon, and knows the road tilts upward at the end of today. Stage 2 climbs to Limone Piemonte, the first of ten summit finishes in this Vuelta and the gentlest of them — but enough to tell Jonas Vingegaard, Juan Ayuso and João Almeida who has arrived with legs.

How it was won

1. 1130 km to go

   Break toward Limone

   A break goes over the climbs toward the uphill finish at Limone Piemonte.

2. 215 km to go

   The sprinters are shelled

   At the foot of the final climb the pace lifts and the pure fast men are dropped.

3. 38 km to go

   GC men to the front

   On the final ascent the overall contenders move up and the bunch shreds.

4. 42 km to go

   Vingegaard draws first blood

   Jonas Vingegaard launches on the steep finale and pips Giulio Ciccone on the line, the Dane striking first in the GC battle.

5. 5At the line

   Vingegaard wins at Limone

   Vingegaard takes the stage atop Limone Piemonte.
