The road
At the start
Bola del Mundo decides it
Forty-four seconds is all that separates Jonas Vingegaard from João Almeida, and there is one mountain left. It is La Bola del Mundo above Madrid — the last 12.3 kilometres finishing on bare concrete ramps steeper than anything on the Angliru — after 4,100 metres of climbing to get there. Whether the stage reaches the summit at all is the other question this race keeps having to ask.
How it was won
- 135 km to go
Ineos animate the break
On the final mountain stage a break goes, Ganna and Bernal animating the early move.
- 50 km to go
Over Navacerrada
Over the Alto de Navacerrada the GC group tightens, UAE controlling the tempo for Almeida.
- 12 km to go
Onto the Bola del Mundo
At the foot of the brutal Bola del Mundo, 12.3km ramping to bare concrete, the leaders are down to five.
- 1 km to go
Vingegaard seals it
Vingegaard attacks inside the final 1.5km on the savage concrete ramps and goes clear of Almeida, sealing the Vuelta with one last mountaintop statement.
- At the line
Vingegaard wins the queen stage
Vingegaard wins atop the Bola del Mundo to clinch the overall; Sepp Kuss takes second.
