The road
At the start
Piancavallo, the last summit finish
Tejay van Garderen finally got his stage win at Ortisei and Adam Yates took the white jersey; at the front Dumoulin still leads Quintana by 31 seconds and Nibali by 1:12, with Pinot up to 1:36. Today ends on Monte Cavallo, the climb to Piancavallo β awkward, steep where it hurts, and the last summit finish of the race. After this there is no mountain left on which to take a minute out of the maglia rosa.
How it was won
- 131 km to go
Dumoulin isolated again
A split on the long descent from the dayβs second climb briefly leaves Dumoulin exposed once more, echoes of the nature-break controversy hanging over the race.
- 32 km to go
Reshuffle before the wall
The breakaway regroups near Maniago before the brutal final climb to Piancavallo.
- 16 km to go
Dumoulin cracks
Movistar detonate the maglia rosa group on the lower Piancavallo; twice Dumoulin fights back, but the third acceleration finally distances him for good.
- 8 km to go
Pinotβs best move
Thibaut Pinot attacks with 7.5km to go, his best effort of the race, cutting through the remnants of the break.
- 3 km to go
Landa hunts them down
Up front Landa catches and passes a tiring SΓ‘nchez and Costa, riding clear toward the win.
