How it was won

  1. 151 km to go

    Polanc up the road

After barely two kilometres Jan Polanc slips into the day’s breakaway, few giving the move any hope of surviving to the slopes of Etna.

  2. 12 km to go

    Rolland flies the peloton

With 12.4km to go Pierre Rolland attacks out of the bunch and builds 35 seconds, but out front Polanc, rocking with effort, refuses to yield.

  3. 3 km to go

    Nibali probes on home roads

Three kilometres from the top Nibali surges, trying to draw out Quintana, but the Colombian is too well supported to be caught out.

  4. 2 km to go

    Zakarin’s late dart

Ilnur Zakarin jumps clear of the GC group and scythes into Polanc’s lead, but the Slovenian has done just enough.

  5. At the line

    Polanc survives on Etna

Jan Polanc holds on atop Mount Etna for a surprise solo win as the favourites finally come alive behind him.
