At the start

To Imola, and the Tre Monti

Simon Yates won in Osimo and now leads Tom Dumoulin by 47 seconds and Thibaut Pinot by 1:04. Today is 215 kilometres north to Imola with barely 800 metres of climbing in them, and the only real difficulty is the Tre Monti, seven kilometres from a finish on the old Formula One circuit. Elia Viviani has not won since Eilat and the sprinters do not want to lose this one.

How it was won

  1. 30 km to go

    The rain splits the bunch

A vengeful downpour with 30km to go sees Lotto lift the pace and the peloton shatter; double stage winner Viviani is caught out behind and out of the picture.

  2. 7 km to go

    Attacks over Tre Monti

Ulissi crests the late climb of Tre Monti with a gap; master descender Mohorič links up with Betancur and the pair hurtle towards the Imola circuit.

  3. At the line

    Bennett's long-range strike

On the sodden race track Sam Bennett unleashes a spectacular long sprint, reeling in the late attackers inside the final 400m and ripping clear for his second win.
