How it was won

  1. 116 km to go

    Over the Roccaraso

The first climb of a long Apennine day thins the front as a large break forges clear towards Gran Sasso.

  2. 32 km to go

    Astana drive on Calascio

On the lower slopes of Calascio, Astana go to the front for López and take huge chunks out of the break, leaving Masnada alone up the road.

  3. 3 km to go

    Masnada's heroics end

The Italian's brave solo is brought to heel by the slimmed-down favourites' group with 2.7km to go, as the race snakes up towards the snowline.

  4. 2 km to go

    Froome dropped at the snowline

Two kilometres from the top, with Ciccone and Pozzovivo forcing the pace, the embattled Froome is shelled out of the leaders' group.

  5. At the line

Yates wins again on Gran Sasso

From the reduced group Yates sprints past Pinot atop Gran Sasso for his second stage win, extending his overall lead.
