At the start

Thirty-five kilometres up to San Marino

A proper time trial at last: 34.7 kilometres out of Riccione, twenty-two of them flat and then a 12.8-kilometre haul into San Marino whose false flats hide ramps close to seven per cent. Valerio Conti's three days in pink meet their reckoning here, and so does everybody else's alibi — this is the day the general classification comes back to the men who came for it.

1. 113 km to go

   Campenaerts sets the mark

   After 22km of flat roads the climb to San Marino begins; out early, Victor Campenaerts blitzes a provisional best minutes faster than anyone, the Hour Record man in his element.

2. 27 km to go

   A hellish rainstorm on the climb

   The 12.8km haul to the finish, its false flats hiding near-7-per-cent ramps, is lashed by a worsening downpour. Roglič powers up it fastest of all, overhauling Campenaerts who had flatted inside the final 2km.

3. 33 km to go

   Yates unravels

   Simon Yates has a nightmare in the rain, only the 40th-fastest rider up the climb, haemorrhaging over two minutes on this ascent alone.

4. 4At the line

   Roglič wins in San Marino

   Roglič takes his second stage by 11 seconds over Campenaerts; Nibali limits his losses to 1:05, but Yates crosses 3:11 down, his overall bid already in tatters.
