At the start

Sestriere, and twelve seconds

One mountain stage left, three men inside fifteen seconds, and two of the three ride for the same team: Kelderman in pink, Hindley at twelve, Geoghegan Hart at fifteen. The planned crossing into France over the Agnello and the Izoard has been struck from the route, so what is left climbs to Sestriere three times, the last of them to the line. Whoever is strongest this afternoon wins the Giro.

How it was won

  1. 52 km to go

    First time up Sestriere

The break crests Sestriere for the first time as the GC group looms below, Ineos and Sunweb readying for the second, decisive ascent.

  2. 30 km to go

    Dennis detonates the group

On the second climb of Sestriere Rohan Dennis, imperious as on the Stelvio, drills the pace so hard that Nibali, Fuglsang and Almeida are shredded some 30km from home.

  3. 27 km to go

    Kelderman cut adrift

Over the top of Sestriere for the penultimate time Dennis leads Geoghegan Hart and Hindley 40 seconds clear of the maglia rosa - Kelderman's pink is slipping away.

  4. 10 km to go

    Dennis buries himself

Through the valley Dennis rides one last colossal turn, stretching Kelderman past a minute and setting up his leader for the final climb - one of the great domestique performances.

  5. 4 km to go

    Almeida jumps for the podium

Four kilometres out Almeida launches for the podium, Kelderman and Bilbao unable to follow as the overall order rearranges behind the leaders.

  6. 1 km to go

    Hindley and Tao trade blows

Hindley attacks twice inside the last 3km, but Geoghegan Hart is glued to him, the pair drawing side by side as Kelderman's lead evaporates.

  7. At the line

    Tied at the top

Geoghegan Hart kicks with 150m left to win the stage at Sestriere, and with the bonuses he and Hindley finish level on time - the first-ever GC tie into a Grand Tour's final day, Kelderman stripped of pink.
