At the start

Vasto to Melfi, a sting in the tail

Nothing has changed at the top: Evenepoel still leads Ganna by 22 seconds and João Almeida by 29, and Jonathan Milan has the points jersey after his first Grand Tour win. Today runs 214 kilometres from Vasto across Molise and Puglia, flat and sedate, until Basilicata turns awkward — a category 3 climb with ten-per-cent ramps, then a sharp category 4 at 26 kilometres to go. Not every sprinter reaches Melfi.

How it was won

  1. 30 km to go

    The Melfi climbs

The rolling hills into Melfi shell sprinter after sprinter; Thibaut Pinot pops clear over the tops to grab the mountains lead in the opening flourish of his farewell Giro.

  2. At the line

    Melfi

Michael Matthews shadows Pedersen's lead-out and jumps from behind with 200 metres to go, passing the Dane for the uphill-sprint win.
