The first mountains, a jersey to lend

Remco Evenepoel still leads, 32 seconds on João Almeida and 44 on Primož Roglič, and he has hinted he would not mind loaning the maglia rosa to a breakaway for a week. Today offers the chance: 176 kilometres out of Venosa, 3,667 metres of climbing, the race above a thousand metres for the first time, and a finish at Lago Laceno up the Colle Molella — gentle at the bottom, brutal in the last four kilometres.

   On the Colle Molella Ineos mass five men on the front to pressure the isolated maglia rosa; Evenepoel simply sits on their wheels and hopes.

2. 23 km to go

   Lago Laceno KOM

   Up front Leknessund distances his companions, but Paret-Peintre claws his way back and is first over the top to take the mountain points.

3. 3At the line

   Lago Laceno

   Beside the lake Aurélien Paret-Peintre kicks hard and Leknessund cracks; the Frenchman takes the stage and the Norwegian the maglia rosa.
