The road

At the start

Twenty-seven seconds of pink left

Filippo Ganna won the time trial and Afonso Eulálio survived it: the maglia rosa is his by twenty-seven seconds from Jonas Vingegaard, with Thymen Arensman third at 1:57 after a ride nobody expected. Today the road to Chiavari turns lumpy — 195 kilometres up the Ligurian coast, the last ninety peppered with short steep climbs and bonus seconds late on.

How it was won

  1. 35 km to go

    Vlasov splits the break

On a minor rise Vlasov digs clear of the lead group and is joined by Stuyven and Narváez, the trio taking a narrow advantage into the final 35km with two climbs still to come.

  2. 13 km to go

    Mas and Narváez go clear

On the Colla dei Scioli and its hilltop Red Bull Kilometre, Mas and Narváez force the pace and shake off Harper, cresting with a slim lead and a two-up battle on their hands.

  3. 7 km to go

    An uneasy flat run-in

Over the top the two settle into a wary truce for the 7km of flat to the finish, Mas soft-pedalling to save something for the sprint with only twenty seconds on the chase.

  4. At the line

    Narváez outkicks Mas

Forced to lead out from 700 metres, Narváez's superior top-end speed proves decisive; Mas cannot come around, and the Ecuadorian takes his second win in four days.
