The road

At the start

A breakaway day at last

Carì put the Giro beyond argument: Jonas Vingegaard leads Felix Gall by 4:03 and Thymen Arensman by 4:27, and Afonso Eulálio has slid from second to fifth. Today nobody wants to control anything — 202 kilometres to Andalo, only three minor climbs but 3,300 metres of false flat, and a last drag topping out eleven kilometres out. Seven teams have won stages; the rest are running out of road.

1. 1117 km to go

   Cavagna's long solo

   From the sprawling break Rémi Cavagna strikes out alone with 117km to go, building two minutes before UAE patiently haul him back.

2. 28 km to go

   Caruso ignites Andalo-Lever

   The wily Caruso attacks onto the final climb, threatening the GC men's podium places, but Rubio counters and the front group fractures.

3. 32 km to go

   Arrieta bridges the gap

   Arrieta jumps with 3.3km to go and makes contact at 2.3km out; as the road levels, the chasers latch on too, leaving six to fight for the win.

4. 41 km to go

   Valgren's perfect timing

   Just before the flamme rouge Valgren unleashes a surge into the barriered section that nobody can follow, the tactical masterstroke of the day.

   A first Grand Tour stage

   Michael Valgren holds on by three seconds to celebrate his maiden Grand Tour stage win.
