At the start

Ciccone in pink, 4,000 metres to climb

Giulio Ciccone's bonus seconds carried him into the maglia rosa at Cosenza, four ahead of Jan Christen. Today is the hardest day yet: 203 kilometres across Basilicata, 4,100 metres of climbing, and the wall of Montagna Grande di Viggiano — 6.6 kilometres at 9.1% — cresting fifty kilometres from Potenza. Kaden Groves and Arnaud De Lie have already gone home.

How it was won

  1. 62 km to go

    Arrieta attacks in the rain

On the rising road 62km from home Arrieta jumps clear of the break, seizing his moment before the day's final classified climb as Red Bull drive the chase behind.

  2. 51 km to go

    Eulálio bridges up

Eulálio hauls himself across to Arrieta with 51km to go, and the pair crest the climb nearly two minutes clear — the Portuguese rider now riding himself into the virtual pink jersey.

  3. 7 km to go

    Both leaders hit the deck

On the treacherous wet descent Arrieta slides off with 13.5km to go, then Eulálio crashes too at 6.5km out. Bruised and reunited, the pair reignite their duel for the final six kilometres.

  4. At the line

    Arrieta salvages the raid

Out of the chaos Arrieta holds firm to win in Potenza for UAE, while Eulálio, beaten by two seconds, rides into the maglia rosa as the peloton trails home over seven minutes down.
