The road

At the start

A third summit before the rest day

Afonso Eulálio still leads, 3:15 over Jonas Vingegaard and 3:34 over Felix Gall, and Fermo cost him nothing. Today is the third mountain-top finish in three days: 184 kilometres from the Adriatic at Cervia into the Apennines, the final 28 doing almost all the climbing and Corno alle Scale touching 15% near the top. A rest day follows, so nobody is saving anything.

How it was won

1. 161 km to go

   Ciccone bridges across

   Over an uncategorised rise Ciccone attacks with Aerts and Ulissi and the strong trio bridge impressively to the break with 61km to go, setting up the day's fight from the front.

2. 212 km to go

   Onto Corno alle Scale

   Ciccone attacks again 11.7km out and only Rubio can follow, the pair hitting the long slopes of Corno alle Scale together as the GC group looms behind.

3. 33 km to go

   Gall lights the GC fuse

   Two and a half kilometres from the line Gall accelerates and drops everyone but Vingegaard, reeling in the fading breakaway.

4. 42 km to go

   Ciccone swept up

   With 1.7km to go Gall passes a spent Ciccone, Vingegaard glued to his wheel and content to let the Austrian do all the work.

5. 51 km to go

   Vingegaard slings clear

   Under the flamme rouge Vingegaard comes off Gall's wheel and accelerates away, distancing his rival in a matter of pedal strokes.

6. 6At the line

   A signal to the rivals

   Vingegaard solos across the line atop Corno alle Scale, a second summit-finish win that leaves no doubt who rules this Giro.
