How it was won

  1. 60 km to go

    Attrition on the Ghisallo

On the Madonna del Ghisallo the real attrition begins as Bahrain-Merida drive the pace for Nibali. Over the top the survivors are 60km from Como and the breakaway is falling apart.

  2. 49 km to go

    The Sormano shatters the race

The Muro di Sormano's 27 per cent ramps bite. Roglič launches 49km out and the peloton explodes; near the top Nibali and Pinot leap clear, while a spectator's camera strap nearly brings down Bardet.

  3. 15 km to go

    Pinot's decisive Civiglio attack

On the Civiglio, the penultimate climb 15km from home, Thibaut Pinot attacks again and again until Nibali finally cracks. The Frenchman crests alone and points himself down towards Como.

  4. 3 km to go

    Nibali counters on Monte Olimpino

With Pinot's win almost certain on Monte Olimpino, Nibali is caught 3km out — and immediately counters, a defiant second wind that shrugs off the chasers to salvage second.

  5. At the line

    Pinot wins on Lake Como

Pinot soloes along the lakefront to take the season's final Monument by 32 seconds. Nibali salvages second, and Dylan Teuns wins the sprint for the last podium place.
