The Race of the Falling Leaves

252 kilometres from Bergamo to Como, 4,800 metres of climbing, the Madonna del Ghisallo, and a Colma di Sormano back for the first time since 2020 — with Tadej Pogačar, in the rainbow jersey, having won the last three editions. A fourth would draw him level with Alfredo Binda, one short of Coppi. Remco Evenepoel has never had a good day here, and abandoned the Giro dell’Emilia last week with an eye problem.

1. 1167 km to go

   A 23-man break goes clear

   After a frantic, attack-strewn start over the Selvino, a huge 23-rider move finally shakes loose and stretches its lead beyond four minutes, UAE happy to let the leash run long across the flat middle of the race.

2. 278 km to go

   UAE reel it in past the Ghisallo

   Rounding the fabled Madonna del Ghisallo, Christen and Majka wind the peloton up and the breakaway's cushion collapses, the race reassembling exactly where UAE want it: at the foot of the Sormano.

3. 349 km to go

   Pogačar detonates on the Sormano

   Adam Yates delivers his leader to the Colma di Sormano, Sivakov peels off, and 48 kilometres from Como the rainbow jersey erupts. In a handful of seconds Pogačar is alone on the mountain, riding away from Evenepoel and Mas as if they were standing still — a solo raid to rival Coppi and Merckx.

4. 432 km to go

   Evenepoel breaks for second

   Unable to work with Mas, Evenepoel throws himself down the Sormano descent alone in pursuit of a shadow, chasing a lead that only keeps growing on the run toward the lake.

5. 57 km to go

   Ciccone lights up San Fermo

   On the final rise of San Fermo, Giulio Ciccone bridges up to the three-man chase and instantly attacks it, riding clear to bring the home crowd their podium finish.

6. 6At the line

   Pogačar's fourth Lombardia in a row

   Pogačar lifts his bike aloft in Como, a fourth consecutive Il Lombardia and a 3:16 winning margin, the largest since Merckx in 1971, capping perhaps the greatest season the sport has seen. Evenepoel takes second, Ciccone a joyous third.
