At the start

Como to Bergamo, and a fifth in sight

Como, and 241 kilometres of Lombardy to Bergamo — the 2023 route, which Pogačar won alone off the Passo di Ganda. The world champion arrives with four straight Lombardias behind him, the rainbow jersey from Kigali on his back and a tenth Monument in reach, Jay Vine and Isaac del Toro alongside him. Remco Evenepoel, beaten by him on each of the last two weekends, rides his final big day in Soudal-QuickStep blue.

How it was won

  1. 200 km to go

    Past the Ghisallo chapel

The cyclists' chapel goes by with the day's break two and a half minutes up the road. Red Bull, Decathlon and UAE take turns on the front of the peloton and let the gap sit exactly there, with two hundred kilometres of Lombardy still to ride.

  2. 137 km to go

    The Roncola culls the break

Nearly three minutes at the foot, and then the Roncola starts taking the move apart — Guernalec and Hellemose first, Hamilton and Glivar after them — until ten riders are left in front. Behind, UAE ride the tricky descents hard enough to split the peloton.

  3. 76 km to go

    Simmons alone on the Crocetta

On the longest climb of the day Quinn Simmons keeps jabbing until only Bilbao, Ganna, Vervaeke and Matthews are still with him, and then not even them. Over the top the US champion has a minute on those four and nearly four on a peloton that has swallowed the rest.

  4. 36 km to go

    Pogačar goes on the Ganda

Vine and Del Toro have already worn the Ganda down to a handful of riders when, halfway up it and thirty-six kilometres from Bergamo, the world champion rises out of the saddle on one of the steep pitches and the race simply ends. Nobody goes with him — not Evenepoel, not Seixas, not Storer — and within a kilometre the rainbow jersey is a lone shape climbing away between the crowds, the gap stretching towards a minute.

  5. 31 km to go

    Over the top, past Simmons

Three kilometres from the summit Pogačar comes up on Simmons and rides straight past him, then crests the Passo di Ganda alone into the long descent on Bergamo. Evenepoel and Storer come over just above a minute down, with everything still to lose.

  6. 3 km to go

The Colle Aperto ends the chase

Evenepoel has dropped Seixas, then Del Toro, then Simmons, then Storer, and the short cobbled ramp up to Bergamo Alta takes the last of it. On the final pitch he has to stop behind a lead motorbike stalled in the crowd, and more seconds go with it.

  7. At the line

Five in a row in Bergamo

Pogačar crosses into a roaring Bergamo as the first rider ever to win a Monument five years running, and the tenth Monument of his career is his. Evenepoel is second at 1:48 — beaten by the same man for the third weekend running — Storer third at 3:14, Simmons fourth.
