At the start

Fifty-four kilometres for the podium

The only individual time trial of this Tour — the first edition since the 1950s to hold just one — and it is a long one: 54 kilometres of flat farmland out of Bergerac before the roads start rolling towards Périgueux. Vincenzo Nibali's yellow jersey is not in question. Second place is: Thibaut Pinot at 7:10, Jean-Christophe Péraud at 7:23, Alejandro Valverde at 7:25, and an afternoon to sort them out.

   Dumoulin sets the mark

   Off early, the young Dutch time trial champion tears into the rolling roads between Bergerac and Périgueux and posts a time nobody in the race will beat — except one.

2. 29 km to go

   The podium changes hands

   Jean-Christophe Péraud, 37 years old, rides past Thibaut Pinot's time to take second overall, while Valverde's dreadful ride leaves him stranded in fourth. France will have two men on the podium in Paris for the first time since 1984.

3. 3At the line

   Martin untouchable, Nibali crowned

   Tony Martin stops the clock at 1:06:21, 1:39 faster than Dumoulin. Nibali is fourth at 1:58 and stretches his lead to 7:52 — a Tour to add to his Giro and his Vuelta, the sixth man in history to win all three.
