How it was won

  1. 137 km to go

    Majka drags the break clear

The first climb comes after 23km and is the perfect launch pad. De Gendt is aggressive early but empties himself; his polka-dot rival RafaΕ‚ Majka makes certain he is in the thirty-man move and pulls it clear.

  2. 47 km to go

    Van Baarle blows it apart

Dylan van Baarle detonates the break on the lower slopes of the Grand Colombier and Dumoulin and Nibali chase past him. Behind, Astana's Diego Rosa lifts the GC group for Aru until only fifteen are left β€” and for perhaps the only time in this Tour, Team Sky look on the back foot.

  3. 38 km to go

    Majka and Pantano slip away

The descent settles it: Zakarin, scarred by his Giro crash on the Agnello, gives ground, and Majka and Pantano ride clear together toward the finishing circuit.

  4. 14 km to go

    Aru tries the Lacets

Fabio Aru attacks on the hairpins and gets a hundred metres before Valverde joins him and Sky calmly haul them back; Bardet's late dig meets the same fate. Up front Majka shakes off Pantano before the summit.

  5. 10 km to go

    Majka nearly loses it

Fourteen kilometres from Culoz, Majka almost comes to grief on the plunging descent and only just keeps the bike upright. The half-second of hesitation is all Pantano needs to get back on.

  6. At the line

    Pantano's day in Culoz

Jarlinson Pantano outsprints Majka for the biggest win of his career and IAM Cycling's first at the Tour. In the GC group Poels leads Froome home untroubled while Tejay van Garderen loses 1:28.
