The road

At the start

Into the Alps, over the Glières gravel

Greg Van Avermaet survived Roubaix and still has yellow, 43 seconds up on Geraint Thomas and 1:42 on Chris Froome; Richie Porte did not. Today the Alps arrive all at once, straight off the rest day: the Col de la Croix Fry, then the Plateau des Glières with a stretch of gravel across its summit — the Tour's first unsurfaced road since 1991 — and then the Col de Romme and the Colombière.

How it was won

1. 190 km to go

   Alaphilippe over the Glières gravel

   Julian Alaphilippe crests the hors-catégorie Plateau des Glières for maximum points, then flies solo across the summit gravel before sitting up to wait for the chase.

2. 228 km to go

   The winning kick on the Romme

   Alaphilippe kicks clear on the Col de Romme and is alone over the top with twenty-eight kilometres to go, leaving the maillot jaune Van Avermaet to chase and bridging up to lone leader Taaramäe.

3. 314 km to go

   Clear over the Colombière

   Alaphilippe drops Taaramäe as the Colombière bites and crests with two minutes in hand, buoyed by the roadside crowds.

4. 4At the line

   Alaphilippe soloes in Le Grand Bornand

   The Frenchman turns a 30km raid over two mountains into the biggest win of his career, punching the air in Le Grand Bornand.
